The cherry blossoms are planning to steal you away, Subaru-san. Do not let the cherry blossoms seduce you, Subaru-san. Never. Never allow them to confuse your mind and heart.
Young Subaru Sumeragi, the 13th head of the Sumeragi Clan met a high school age Seishirou when he was just nine. Wandering off as his grandmother took a walk in the part with a young student, Subaru found a beautiful Sakura tree shedding its pink leaves. He was transfixed by the beauty, watching the leaves fall before realizing that he was not alone. Also standing by the tree was an 18 year old high school student with a dead little girl in his arms, which he was 'feeding' to the tree. This was Seishirou, already the Sakurazukamori. Though Seishirou should have killed Subaru right away, he instead told him the story of the sakura tree, and then made a bet with him, which Subaru didn't hear over the sound of the blowing wind. Before he left the young Seishirou, the older boy kissed the backs of his hands to leave on them the mark of the Sakurazukamori, marking him as his prey. The young Subaru left without finding out the boys name, innocently unaware of how binding that secret promise was. When he found his grandmother, she saw the glowing inverted pentagrams on his hands, realizing that he had been marked by the Sakurazukamori. To protect him, she ordered him to wear protective gloves over his hands, hoping that they would keep the Sakurazukamori from seeing his mark.
They met again seven years later as Subaru chased a sprit bird through Shinjuku station. Seishirou, waiting for the train on his way home from work, saw the young onmyouji trip and fall. He rushed over to 'help' him, seeing the marks left on Subaru's hands despite the gloves. Just as his bet seven years earlier had promised, they would meet again. Only, Subaru was unaware that this man, who introduced himself as Seishirou Sakurazuka, was the same person that he had met all those years ago under the sakura tree. Seshirou was so sweet and fun to be around that Subaru and he became fast friends despite their age difference. After a while, Seishirou even announced that he was in love with Subaru, which Subaru took as an uncomfortable joke since he too secretly had a crush on Seishirou.
Being a smart boy, Subaru and his twin sister Hokuto made the connection between Seishirou's last name and the Sakurazukamori. They were quite aware that Seishirou was part of the family who formed the Sakurazukamori clan. But Seishirou was always quick to dispel their worries, telling them that despite what his families business was, he was just a kind, easy going vet. This was enough to convince them that Seishirou was just a simple man, though his family was that of the Sakurazukamori assassin. they kept their friendship with him secret, knowing that their grandmother would be very angry if she knew that they were friends with a member of the Sakurazuka family, even if he did claim not to have anything to do with the Sakurazukamori. One thing haunted Subaru though... the similarity of Seishirou to the young boy he met under the Sakura tree.
All the while, Seishirou was simply playing a part, biding his time until the year had passed and the bet was fulfilled. That entire year he stayed close to Subaru, declaring constant love, and secretly protecting him from harm. After all, Seishirou was not going to let anyone else harm or kill his prey, that was for him to do when the time had come. His dark nature was revealed to the reader, though not to poor Subaru- who was always knocked out when Seishirou unleashed his own spiritual power- when he would kill or hurt others without the slightest hint of remorse or hesitation. In his protection of Subaru, Seishirou even lost an eye. Subaru was so distraught over what had happened, he realized that the one thing he didn't want was for Seishirou to hate him. Why? Because he loved him. Finally coming to terms with the fact that he was in love with Seishirou, Subaru ran to his hospital room to admit this to him. Only, it wasn't the hospital room that he found himself in, but an illusion. The year of the bet had come to an end. Seishirou coldly informed that he was the Sakurazukamori, and that Subaru had lost the bet because Seishirou didn't love him, and that it was time for Subaru to die.
Moments before Subaru was to be killed, he was rescued by a spell of his grandmother's. He was free of the illusion, but it was just a matter of time before Seishirou came back to finish the job. After all, he was the Sakurazukamori, who felt nothing for no one, and felt the same of crushing a person's skull as they did breaking a glass. Subaru fell into a depression where he wouldn't wake up, wouldn't speak, and would only sit in silence. His heart was broken. Hokuto, seeing this, decided to sacrifice herself to Seishirou. He happily killed her. The shock of feeling his sister die broke Subaru from his trance, his heart broken more than before. Not only had the man he loved betrayed him, but this same man had killed his sister. But, the Sakurazukamori was no longer out for Subaru's blood. Now, Subaru was bent on training to get as strong as possible so that when he once again came face to face with Seishirou, he would be a formidable foe.
A lot of questions can be raised about the nature of Subaru and Seishirou's relationship, and whether Seishirou really did love him. After all, Seishirou did hesitate the moment before killing Subaru, allowing just enough time for Subaru's grandmother to intervene. Seishirou is a powerful assassin, and he could have surely stopped her from taking Subaru away if he wanted to, but he didn't. And also, he could have come to kill Subaru whenever he wanted to, even after killing Hokuto. A man who felt nothing for no one wouldn't have cared that Hokuto had sacrificed herself for Subaru, and would have killed him because he was his prey, pure and simple. Perhaps Seishirou did feel something for Subaru, but didn't know what it was. Maybe, though he felt love for Subaru, his life of emotional deprivation led to a sort of retardation of his emotional capability, and he would not realize his love until it was too late.
